OUR STORY
The History of Calvary Gospel Church
Humble Beginnings - Calvary Gospel Church was born from a Friday night Bible class led by Miss Susan Beers, a teacher affiliated with the Peniel Bible Conference. The group fervently prayed for an interdenominational church in Newark—one where people could receive Christ and grow in their faith.
In 1946–47, Pastor and Mrs. Willcox joined the class and shared this vision. After weeks of prayer, the group felt led to request use of the Women's Christian Temperance Union Hall at 128 Mulberry Street. Though initially denied twice, their persistence and prayer prevailed. Before the hall was granted, the first Sunday service was held on November 9, 1947, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Heintz in Irvington, NJ.
On May 6, 1949, the fellowship was officially incorporated as Calvary Gospel Church. Later that month, Pastor Willcox was ordained by a council of ministers from various denominations. The ordination was marked by a powerful message from Rev. A.W. Bailey, a missionary to Africa and Pastor Willcox’s father-in-law.

OUR MISSION & VALUES
Pivoting for Purpose
Like many churches, CGC experienced a significant shift in daily life and worship traditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing the urgent need for spiritual connection and support, Pastor Davis and the Board of Elders took swift action to reimagine how the church could continue to serve its community.
They launched an alternative worship strategy designed to foster connection both virtually and, eventually, in person. A COVID-19 Response Team was formed, bringing together CGC members from essential professions to build a sustainable framework for ministry during uncertain times.
Daily prayer calls were initiated—calls that continue to this day—offering consistent encouragement and unity. CGC also expanded its outreach through online services and outdoor gatherings, ultimately returning to corporate worship in late Fall 2020.
Through faith, innovation, and community, CGC remained steadfast in its mission, pivoting with purpose to meet the moment.
A Deeper Look at Our History
-
In November 1949, the church acquired its first building—a 2½-family house at 91 North 7th Street. The sanctuary began in the pastor’s living room and expanded as attendance grew. By 1953, membership reached 24, and by 1959, it had grown to 63.
Despite limited financial resources (only 17 regular incomes), the church raised over $11,000 annually by 1959. Pastor Willcox earned $65 per week, and the church supported Assistant Pastor Richard F. Lovelace, later of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
-
By 1955, the need for a larger space became clear. A building fund was launched in 1957–58. On September 11, 1962, the Board of Elders held their first prayer day, adopting the theme “Missionaries to Newark.” This marked a shift in identity—from a social religious group to a mission station in the city.
God’s provision came through the Open Air Campaigners (OAC), led by Rev. Arthur Williams. Their presence strengthened CGC’s evangelistic efforts. Eventually, the church was offered the building at 17 Lyons Avenue by the Elizabeth Avenue Baptist Church. After months of prayer and negotiation, CGC moved into its new home on February 29, 1964.
-
With a dedicated church building, CGC flourished. Evangelistic seminars, youth outreach through the Conqueror’s Gospel Team, and various ministries expanded the church’s impact.
The 1967 Newark riots, though tragic, opened hearts to the Gospel. CGC seized the opportunity for summer evangelism and deepened its commitment to youth ministry. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, teens were the heartbeat of the church, with Friday night Conqueror’s meetings drawing over 100 attendees.
This vibrant youth ministry led to the construction of an education wing and the founding of Calvary Christian School in the 1970s.
-
In the early 1980s, the Willcoxes sensed it was time to transition leadership. Though initially planning to step down, they remained at the congregation’s request. Their calling to missions led them to Uganda for short-term service in 1989–91. On November 17, 1992, they departed for full-time missionary work under the Anglican Church of Uganda.
Though CGC lost its founding pastor of 45 years, the Good Shepherd continued to guide His church.
-
Following the Willcoxes’ departure, the Board of Elders led the church. After a year of prayer and discernment, Rev. Dr. Steven B. Davis—who had grown up in CGC and previously served as Youth Minister—was called as Pastor on June 6, 1993.
Rev. Davis and his wife Denise had led the Conqueror’s Club before serving in Virginia. Their return marked a full-circle moment for CGC.
